Children become frightened and have meltdowns when their emotional nervous system or limbic brain is over stimulated. If you think of a power surge or strong electrical charge shorting out an appliance, then you understand the emotional energy that can overwhelm a child who hasn’t yet mastered the skills for emotional balance. When tired, over stimulated or frightened, children need help in sorting out the feelings; this is especially true for children who are sensitive, psychic, or intuitive. The first order of business is to help the child feel safe. The myriad of techniques, listed here over the next few weeks, have one purpose – to move energy from the inside to the outside. Helping children express pent-up, fearful, or negative ideas and feelings into some form of expression teaches them how to help themselves.
