Through touch, you teach the child to trust his emotions and his body’s messages. By pairing touch with empathy you teach the child to accept himself, calming the nervous system. Holding your child, if possible, next to your heart is the most effective way to bring calm. Heart to heart hugs look like cradling the child in your lap, his back to your chest or kneeling down to tour child’s level and embracing her heart to yours. Rocking also achieves calm effectively.
