She Is Not A Ghost
My grandmom with short slim feature, blonde head and no teeth made her look like a newborn Child. She was a dreamer, and a disciplined lady. A rare combination that made her really cool.
Grandma dreamt of my marriage everyday. She would come up with her late night true love stories to amuse me of her love (my late granddad) whenever we went to Coorg to meet her. She would make a pictorial presentation of all that they loved and lived. If her stories were to have to halt of no resources then she would begin her daughter’s (my mom) and son’s love story. She was a ‘love lady’ who described marriage as a beautiful gift of God.
Few days before grandmother’s demise she called my mom and asked about my marriage. When mom replied it would be only after three years she laughed satirically and said, “Do you think I will live till then?” My mom assuredly answered, “You will and you have to if you want to see her in those white flowing gown .”
Grandma died just after two days of this conversation. I ran leaving all my work behind to attend the funeral. Every second of that day is still alive. I can recite the whole story without a second taught.
After few weeks when I returned back to my hostel the days were just the same, but something pricked me. The thought that I can never see her made me sink into deep darkness. As I laid down early that night for a good night sleep, I woke up around 3:00 a.m. in the morning when I saw her sitting at the foot of my bed. I asked her “what happened why you are still awake, come….” The image shaded as she smiled, there was nobody. I panicked and hid myself in the dark blanket not to open it till twilight soon the sleep covered me.
After few weeks I dreamt something weird out of the ordinary. I was holding grandma gently, her head leaning on my shoulder and walking an unknown path. She asked me,
Aren’t you scared of me?
Me: “why should I be? You are such a gentle soul. You never harmed anybody when you were alive, why would you do so when you are dead?
Grandma: You are such a sweet child. I will tell you a secret today that your mom knows; tell it to her, this will be a sign that I meet you every night. Tell mom that the old man who chewed tobacco and gave sweets to you when you were young is sending his good wishes to you and your family (he died many years ago). You don’t remember him well as you were very young then. Ask him whether he stayed in the uphill of our house.
I woke up at 3:00 a.m. again, I wanted to call mom the very moment and ask her about it. But I did not wish to disturb her at night, so the same evening after a heavy schedule I called her up to tell her the story. She was startled too as it was true.
Believe it or not till date as far as I remember, I have met her in all my dreams. People get scared of spirits and some don’t believe them. I believe them and as far as my grandma is concerned I am not scared of them. I visualize my granny today as a small sweet young lady with black flowing hair and wings attached. She carries a crown with the world’s biggest diamond and welcomes my sweet dream every night, reciting her same old love stories of her life. She is not a ghost. She is my guardian angel. She loves me and I love her too. She will be there with us till eternity and surely will be a part of my marriage celebrations soon.
